How important and how significant are our prayers?
2 Corinthians 5:18 KJV
And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
Us being given the ministry of reconciliation is not us taking on the sins of the world. Only Jesus could do that. It is us primarily taking on (acknowledging) our own sins and those of others which we become aware of.
Matthew 26:37 KJV
And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.
Jesus was experiencing the fulfillment of a prophecy given 4000 years previously to the serpent.

Whenever God’s people have risen to the occasion of fully surrendering to God and doing His will, they have gone through their own Gethsemane experience.

Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
Jesus didn’t deserve to suffer.
Jesus work for us was substitutionary or vicarious.
When Jesus calls us to partake in this ministry of reconciliation, is it substitutionary or merely discretionary on our part? Do we suffer vicariously on behalf of others?
Does this passage suddenly change cadence?

And in the Apocrypha we read:
On the next day, as had now become necessary, Judas and his men went to take up the bodies of the fallen and to bring them back to lie with their kindred in the tombs of their ancestors. 40 Then under the tunic of each one of the dead they found sacred tokens of the idols of Jamnia, which the law forbids the Jews to wear. And it became clear to all that this was the reason these men had fallen. 41 So they all blessed the ways of the Lord, the righteous judge, who reveals the things that are hidden, 42 and they turned to supplication, praying that the sin that had been committed might be wholly blotted out. The noble Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves free from sin, for they had seen with their own eyes what had happened as the result of the sin of those who had fallen. 43 He also took up a collection, man by man, to the amount of two thousand drachmas of silver, and sent it to Jerusalem to provide for a purification offering. In doing this he acted very well and honorably, taking account of the resurrection. 44 For if he were not expecting that those who had fallen would rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to pray for the dead. 45 But if he was looking to the splendid reward that is laid up for those who fall asleep in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Therefore he made atonement for the dead, so that they might be delivered from their sin.

This Old Testament example shows that even back then, the prayers of God’s servants were important and meaningful to God.
When Jesus gives to us the ministry of reconciliation it means he gives to us something of the experience of Jesus who became sin for us…..
If Jesus surrendered to his father’s will, we should do the same. There are some things that cannot be avoided. Accept the pain and move on.

For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
Colossians 1:24 NKJV
I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church,
There must be a degree to which our life’s experiences equate to the sufferings of Christ, otherwise the above texts would be meaningless. But we can always rest assured – 1 Corinthians 10:13 KJV – God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able;
Jesus life and sacrifice gives Him the right to answer our prayers
Romans 7:4 GNT – you also have died because you are part of the body of Christ;
Psalm 69:9 KJV
For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.
12 After this I saw the same man come down from the mountain and call to himself another multitude that was peaceable. 13 Then many people came to him, some of whom were joyful and some sorrowful; some of them were bound, and some were bringing others as offerings. 2 Esdras 13:12,13
We shall come rejoicing bringing in the sheaves. Ps. 126:5,6
If Jesus experience of reconciliation, of becoming sin for us, (vs. 21) is described in Ps. 22. Then is it our work of reconciliation being described in Ps. 38 ?
If the first part of the above passage refers to reconciliation being substitutionary why would the second part of the passage have reconciliation being merely discretionary or advisory. (Discretionary means it’s up to you to decide.) We are not talking about salvation for every soul here. The Bible doesn’t teach that. 1 John 5:16 NIV – There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that.
But the Spirit will direct our prayers so that they are in keeping with God’s will. When Jesus gives to us the ministry of reconciliation it means he gives to us something of the experience of Jesus who became sin for us.
Galatians 3:13 NASB
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”—
Romans 7:4 GNT – you also have died because you are part of the body of Christ;
In praying for others we feel their pain.
There is a degree to which we enter into the sufferings of Christ. But to what degree that degree of suffering is substitutionary and to what degree it is discretionary or advisory only, is dependant totally upon God and his calling.

And so God’s blessings are not given just because someone decides to have them or works hard to get them. They are given because God takes pity on those he wants to. [27] Isaiah the prophet cried out concerning the Jews that though there would be millions of them, only a small number would ever be saved.

And of all the blessings that heaven can bestow upon men fellowship with Christ in his sufferings is the most weighty trust and the highest honour. D of A p.225
The book of Job talks of the importance of intercessory prayer.
Job 33:19,23-24 KJV
He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain: [23] If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his uprightness: [24] Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.
If is clear from the above text that not many – perhaps one in thousand, will understand or be called to this type of ministry.
Matthew 26:40 KJV – What, could ye not watch with me one hour?
A particularly harrowing time lay just ahead of Jesus and His disciples and they allowed sleep to overcome them.
But God who is forever gracious said: Matthew 26:45 KJV – Sleep on now, and take your rest:
Jesus understood their plight and their weakness. They could say with the Psalmist:
Psalm 18:35 KJV
Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great.
