When Jesus Returns

His return will be visible to all. Jesus will not come down upon this earth at that time. Contrary to popular teaching his feet will not touch the ground.

And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. [10] And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, [11] and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” Acts 1:9-11 ESV

Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen Revelation 1:7 KJV

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: [17] Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. [18] Wherefore comfort one another with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 KJV

There is nothing secret about the second coming of Jesus. The above verses make that plain. There are only two classes then. Those who are waiting for Jesus. And those who are destroyed by the brightness of His coming.

Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.  Acts 1:11 KJV

In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. [53] For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.  1 Corinthians 15:52-53 KJV

There is no second chance. Scripture is clear on this.

And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, [28] so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.  Hebrews 9:27-28 ESV

God will ‘deal with sin’, not at His second coming, but at the end of the 1000 years.

Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. Revelation 1:7 KJV
For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. [3] For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.  1 Thessalonians 5:2-3 KJV

If those who are ‘sleeping’ were already in Heaven there would be no need for the first resurrection at the 2nd coming of Jesus. That’s why it is important to understand that the dead are sleeping until Jesus comes. Both the Old Testament and the New Testament are clear on this.

So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.
Job 14:12 KJV

These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. [12] Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. [13] Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. [14] Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. John 11:11-14 KJV

At that time when Jesus returns, the saints who are waiting for him and all of those who are brought up in the first resurrection will be caught up with Jesus in the air. There they will be taken back to heaven with Jesus for a period of 1000 years. That is the time when the books will be opened and all of our questions will be answered. After that period of time they will be brought back to this earth to witness the second resurrection and the final judgement.

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. [2] In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so , I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. [3] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. John 14:1-3 KJV

Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years. Revelation 20:6 ESV

…the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened. Daniel 7:10 ESV

The wicked will be destroyed when Jesus returns. But there is still no hell or hellfire at that time. Hellfire or final judgement is reserved until after the 1000 years.

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. [11] Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, [12] waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! [13] But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 2 Peter 3:10-13 ESV

The first resurrection is at the beginning of the one thousand years. The second resurrection is at the end of the one thousand years. This second resurrection will involve the final judgement of those who have died without Christ.

And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer,  until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while. Rev.20:2,3 ESV

What will happen to Satan and his host of fallen angels (demons) during the 1000 year period? They will be “bound” in the sense that there will be no living thing on the earth to tempt or inhabit during this time. Does the Bible anywhere else describe the state of the earth during this 1000 year period?

I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light. [24] I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly. [25] I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled. [26] I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the Lord, and by his fierce anger. [27] For thus hath the Lord said, The whole land shall be desolate; yet will I not make a full end. Jeremiah 4:23-27 KJV

The prophet Isaiah talks of this time.

On that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven in heaven, and on earth the kings of the earth. [22] They will be gathered together like prisoners in a pit; they will be shut up in a prison, and after many days they will be punished. Isaiah 24:21-22 NRSV

Note that Jeremiah says that God would “not make a full end”. This shows that there was something further going to happen.  Isaiah says clearly that after many days (the 1000 years) they will be punished.  Jesus said clearly that there will be two resurrections.

Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. John 5:28,29 ESV

At the end of the 1000 years there will be a final judgement of the devil and his host. This will be the same judgement of the unrepentant who have rejected the gospel of Jesus Christ. Of course there will be varying degrees of punishment. God is the only one who can determine this. At the end of the 1000 years Satan will be released from his prison in the sense that he will once again have the resurrected wicked to tempt and manipulate.

And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison and will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth… Revelation 20:7 ESV

Then will come the final judgement.

And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:15 ESV

This will be the final judgement. Evil will never rise again in God’s creation.

…He will make a complete end; trouble will not rise up a second time. Nahum 1:9  ESV

After the final judgement the redeemed will inherit the re-created earth with their Saviour, Jesus.

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes…. Revelation 21:1-4. ESV
