Ellen White and her husband James wrote:
“I saw that the Apocrypha was the hidden book, and that the wise of these last days should understand it.” 16 Manuscript Release Page 34
James White also wrote in the Review and Herald dated Feb. 2, 1869 page 48 “The Association will probably issue an edition of the Apocrypha with references soon, which, well bound, can be sold for about seventy-five cents a copy.” Also in the Review and Herald dated Aug. 5, 1858 page 96 in a response “To Correspondents” we read “Concerning the Apocrypha, we regard portions of it as containing much light and instruction. If we were asked to specify, we should mention 2 Esdras, Wisdom of Solomon, and 1 Maccabees.It’s interesting that James and Ellen White should be recommending books from the Apocrypha – books that have often been considered the sole repository of the Roman Catholic Church. This is the church that is considered by many to be the beast power of Revelation 13. The power that will give rise to the anti-christ. This is not just the belief of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. In the preface of all King James Bible’s it is written:
“Christendom, by writing in defense of the Truth (which hath given such a blow unto that man of sin, as will not be healed,)”The “man of sin” referred to here has always been referred to, in Protestant circles, as the Pope.
So going back 400 years it was believed that the beast power of Rev. 13 was indeed the Papacy. Now (and some will disagree on this) the world and the church has moved on.The Roman Catholic Church does not now keep the Bible from the common layman. Nor does it burn people at the stake for dissenting views of the church.
In fact some of the best bound copies of Holy Scripture (including the Apocrypha) come from Catholic presses.
Their speakers and writers often show profound understanding of the gospel of Jesus and the Christian walk.
The world has moved on from the dark ages.We should now be rejoicing that the Roman Catholic Church has seen the error of its ways and now has Holy Scripture freely available to all. We should not be holding onto outdated doctrine – willing it to be true.
We only have to look at the book of Jonah to see that prophesy is only relevant for the era in which it is given.
The people of Nineveh changed when they believed the prophetic warning of Jonah. (Jonah 3:5; Luke 11:32) The teachings of the great reformers like Martin Luther had a profound effect, not just on the world at large, but on the Roman Catholic Church itself.
Jonah’s dire prediction over Nineveh did not come to pass. He should have been rejoicing that the people of Nineveh had repented and were following a more noble pathway. Instead he was sulking because his prophecy hadn’t been fulfilled as he expected. We, like Jonah, shouldn’t be afraid of change.We are not saying here that the Roman Catholic Church is suddenly the repository of all truth. We know that is not the case. She still holds grave errors such as the doctrine of hellfire and external torment.
This website holds to the view that the translators of the King James Version of the Bible were correct in attributing the beast power of Revelation 13 to the Papacy.
Prophecy is progressive. What is true and relevant for one era becomes outdated in the next. In 1611 when the KJV was published there had been no French Revolution, believed by many to be the birthplace of communism.Revelation 11:4,7 GNT
The two witnesses are the two olive trees and the two lamps that stand before the Lord of the earth. [7] When they finish proclaiming their message, the beast that comes up out of the abyss will fight against them. He will defeat them and kill them,The reader is invited to read all of Revelation 11. and the article on this website, “Communism….and The World Today”.
The pioneers of the SDA church knew about the French Revolution but knew nothing of communism. Ellen White died in 1915, two years before the Russian Revolution.
As we look out on the world today it is not now the Roman Catholic Church oppressing the people. It is the beast that ascends from the bottomless pit, assisted by the 2 horned beast that started out as a lamb but is becoming an oppressing power in its own right. As we look out on the world today it’s not hard to see Russia (the offspring of communism) and the United States of America as fulfilling the roles of the beast and the image to the beast. The Seventh-day Adventist church has always taught that the United States of America will be responsible for bringing oppression into the world. Seventh-day Adventists will be saying now, there’s no Sunday laws so there can’t be an image to the beast yet.
We need to be careful in looking for signs or perceived prophetic fulfillment. Remember the words of Jesus.Matthew 12:39 KJV
But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:The sabbath is called a sign. (Exodus 31:13; Ezekiel 20:12)
Instead of being a sign that we cling to, the sabbath, a part of the letter of the law, could be the signpost that is meant to show us the true spiritual dimension of the law. The spiritual meaning of the sabbath is our total rest in Christ. This is the true sign – something that is happening inside us – not some event taking place in the world.
God’s people are told not to look for signs and wonders.Matthew 12:39 KJV
But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:In case we think that passage is too descriptive for the SDA Church. (“evil and adulterous generation”) We are reminded of another passage of Scripture that Ellen White clearly says is referring to the SDA Church.
Revelation 3:14-19 KJV And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; [15] I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. [16] So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. [17] Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: [18] I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. [19] As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
“The Message to the church of the Laodiceans is a startling denunciation, and is applicable to the people of God at the present time.” E G White. 3T 252.1

This will not necessarily be understood by the majority or by the religious leaders.

You could say that James and Ellen White, in wanting to print copies of the Apocrypha,were a step ahead of their brethren who wanted to cling to the old, well worn pathway making the Roman Catholic Church the beast power of Revelation 13.

“There is no excuse for anyone in taking the position that there is no more truth to be revealed, and that all our expositions of Scripture are without an error. The fact that certain doctrines have been held as truth for many years by our people, is not a proof that our ideas are infallible. Age will not make error into truth, and truth can afford to be fair. No true doctrine will lose anything by close investigation.”
Just as mainstream Protestantism has erred in looking to historical Israel and events in the Middle East as fulfillment of last days Bible prophecy. So the SDA church has erred in clinging to the Papacy as the anti-christ power of the last days. And subsequently waiting for this organisation to declare “Sunday laws”. They are building that premise on something that the apostle Paul seems quite casual about. We quote it in the Amplified Version which gives added clarity to what he is saying.
Romans 14:5 AMP
One person regards one day as better [or more important] than another, while another regards every day [the same as any other]. Let everyone be fully convinced (assured, satisfied) in his own mind.Revelation 1:10 KJV
I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,We are told in the marginal reference of The Amplified Bible: The early church used this term to refer to Sunday, the day of Jesus’ resurrection. The term Kyriake is also the regular word for Sunday in modern Greek.
This does not mean that the SDA church has been preaching error for all these generations. It simply means: Galatians 3:24-25 KJV Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. [25] But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.If then, the Papacy is not the beast power of Revelation 13. And if then the forces of communism more exactly fit the description of the beast in a present, last day setting, what then would be the expectation of the Mark of the Beast? If it is not Sunday laws as taught by the Seventh-day Adventist church for generations, what would it be?
How do we identify the anti-christ power of the last days?
1) Firstly it will be a pseudo religious power.
2 Timothy 3:5 KJV Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
2) It will rely on force.
Daniel 11:37-38 NLT – He will have no respect for the gods of his ancestors, or for the god loved by women, or for any other god, for he will boast that he is greater than them all.
Instead of these, he will worship the god of fortresses
Revelation 13:17 NLT – no one could buy or sell anything without that mark
3) An amalgamation of church and state.
Revelation 13:11 NLT Then I saw another beast come up out of the earth. He had two horns like those of a lamb, but he spoke with the voice of a dragon.
The two horns like a lamb, denote civil and religious liberty. But it changes to speak the voice of aggression.
We need to be open minded about what the mark of the beast will be. It will become apparent as the day approaches. No Christian who has entered the genuine Sabbath-rest need fear being deceived.

Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment. [10] Therefore I said, Hearken to me; I also will shew mine opinion.Truth is a many faceted diamond.
Matthew 13:45-46 KJV
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: [46] Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.Under the Old Covenant the Sabbath was always something that we do (or don’t do). This seems to be the case with all OT texts concerning the Sabbath except Ezekiel 20:12 and Exodus 31:13 which equate the Sabbath with something God does within us.
Ezekiel 20:12 KJV Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them.
This may be the text that links the Old and the New Testaments on this subject.
Whereas in the New Testament the Sabbath is spoken of more in a spiritual sense – ie more something that happens within us. This is particularly so in the writings of Paul.Jeremiah 31:31-33 KJV

The Gentiles do not have the Law; but whenever they do by instinct what the Law commands, they are their own law, even though they do not have the Law. [15] Their conduct shows that what the Law commands is written in their hearts. Their consciences also show that this is true, since their thoughts sometimes accuse them and sometimes defend them.The Lord’s day of Rev. 1:10 does appear, with honest scriptural analysis, to be Sunday morning.
In believing the words of Jesus that “no sign will be given except the sign of the prophet Jonah”, Jesus is preparing us to be ready.
There may indeed be Sunday laws – a pseudo religious government forcing onto the people what they say is right for them. But in narrowing the Mark of the Beast down to that perspective alone, we may be shutting our eyes to something that is not so apparent but is even more important and decisive.
