Home

A new look at prayer and intercession. Many are hearing and appreciating these words. There are no denominational boundaries here. God has something more for us. Some of the quotes are from Seventh – Day Adventist authors. They are given with the belief that they are for all Christians not just SDA’s. Christianity was never meant to be exclusive. A genuine, Spirit-led awakening awaits all who are prepared to believe and surrender.

Intercession Explored

 Revelation chapter 5 “….needs to be closely studied. It is of great importance to those who shall act out a part in the work of God for these last days.” (Test. vol.9 p.267) 

And in Rev. 5:8 we read: When he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell before the Lamb, each holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

These prayers are obviously on behalf of God’s work which is – saving souls. And again we read:

“I saw that the Apocrypha was the hidden book, and that the wise of these last days should understand it.” 16 Manuscript Release Page 34

James White also wrote in the Review and Herald dated Feb. 2, 1869 page 48 “The Association will probably issue an edition of the Apocrypha with references soon, which, well bound, can be sold for about seventy-five cents a copy.” Also in the Review and Herald dated Aug. 5, 1858 page 96 in a response “To Correspondents” we read “Concerning the Apocrypha, we regard portions of it as containing much light and instruction. If we were asked to specify, we should mention 2 Esdras, Wisdom of Solomon, and 1 Maccabees.

And in talking of the time just prior to the final judgement we read from the Apocrypha:

102 I answered and said, “If I have found favor in your sight, show further to me, your servant, whether on the day of judgment the righteous will be able to intercede for the ungodly or to entreat the Most High for them— 103 fathers for sons or sons for parents, brothers for brothers, relatives for their kindred, or friends for those who are most dear.” 2 Esdras 7:102,103 NRSV 

111 So if now, when corruption has increased and unrighteousness has multiplied, the righteous have prayed for the ungodly, why will it not be so then as well?” 112 He answered me and said, “This present world is not the end; the full glory does not remain in it; therefore those who were strong prayed for the weak. 2 Esdras 7:111,112  31 For we and our ancestors have passed our lives in ways that bring death; but it is because of us sinners that you are called merciful. 32 For if you have desired to have pity on us, who have no works of righteousness, then you will be called merciful.  35 For in truth there is no one among those who have been born who has not acted wickedly; among those who have existed there is no one who has not done wrong. 36 For in this, O Lord, your righteousness and goodness will be declared, when you are merciful to those who have no store of good works.” 2 Esdras 8:31,32,35,36

 12 After this I saw the same man come down from the mountain and call to himself another multitude that was peaceable. 13 Then many people came to him, some of whom were joyful and some sorrowful; some of them were bound, and some were bringing others as offerings. 2 Esdras 13:12,13

Are the above verses referring to those who are walking in the footsteps of Jesus in giving their lives for others?

The following passage from 2 Maccabees 12 is meaningful and should not be discarded. It bears a striking resemblance to Paul’s writings in 1 Cor. 15. Both passages are quoted below.

 34 When they joined battle, it happened that a few of the Jews fell. Prayers for Those Killed in Battle 38 Then Judas assembled his army and went to the city of Adullam. As the seventh day was coming on, they purified themselves according to the custom, and kept the sabbath there. 39 On the next day, as had now become necessary, Judas and his men went to take up the bodies of the fallen and to bring them back to lie with their kindred in the sepulchres of their ancestors. 40 Then under the tunic of each one of the dead they found sacred tokens of the idols of Jamnia, which the law forbids the Jews to wear. And it became clear to all that this was the reason these men had fallen. 41 So they all blessed the ways of the Lord, the righteous judge, who reveals the things that are hidden; 42 and they turned to supplication, praying that the sin that had been committed might be wholly blotted out. The noble Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves free from sin, for they had seen with their own eyes what had happened as the result of the sin of those who had fallen. 43 He also took up a collection, man by man, to the amount of two thousand drachmas of silver, and sent it to Jerusalem to provide for a sin offering. In doing this he acted very well and honorably, taking account of the resurrection. 44 For if he were not expecting that those who had fallen would rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to pray for the dead. 45 But if he was looking to the splendid reward that is laid up for those who fall asleep in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Therefore he made atonement for the dead, so that they might be delivered from their sin. 2 Maccabees 12:34, 38-45 NRSV

But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. [21] For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. [22] For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. [23] But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming. [29] Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead? 1 Corinthians 15:20-23,29 KJV

Some will be saying, how can a controversial subject like ‘prayers for the dead’ be so important? That is a fair question. Perhaps only understood by those – who live in war-torn countries – who have lost loved ones through untimely accidents or violence. Or by those who have come to know God after losing loved ones that they would have loved to share and pray for. Well the good news is, with this knowledge and understanding these things are possible.
It’s a comforting thought to know that we can intercede (pray) for, not only those who are living, but also for those who have fallen asleep. We worship the God of eternity. We can fully grasp the promise of the following verse.

Isaiah 59:1 KJV
Behold, the LORD’S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:

This is giving incalculable understanding and meaning to Daniel 8:14 – the verse that is the lynchpin of Seventh-day Adventism. Because they are the ones who understand that death is a sleep until the resurrection. Unlike the belief of most Protestants, who believe that those who die receive their rewards immediately at death. This gives special significance to Daniel 8:14.

Daniel 8:14 AMP
He said to me, “For 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary will be cleansed and properly restored.”

The Jewish celebration of the Feast of Lights (Hanukkah) in December commemorates the recapture of Jerusalem by the army of Judas Maccabeus and the purification of the sanctuary. (Amplified Version footnote to vs.14.)

Take note, the above quoted verse that comes from 2nd Maccabees talks of this theme and is then reiterated by the apostle Paul. Paul’s quotation of this verse makes it very relevant to the New Testament era.

If Judas Maccabeus restored the sanctuary to its rightful state back in 164 BC. Then it is Seventh-day Adventists who restore the sanctuary to its rightful state in modern times. And this involves far more than some judicial phase of God’s judgement beginning in 1844.
It involves God’s ‘Sabbath keeping’ people finding the true New Covenant Sabbath-rest. And being able to pray as never before. After all, what was our Saviour’s first thought on His resurrection morning.
1 Peter 3:19 KJV – he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; (read this whole passage, verses 18-22)

He loved His people – stretching right back to His creation. Our memories don’t go that far back but they are nevertheless very real. We don’t comprehend the real and deep love of God. He has waited for aeons of time for His people to understand.

Hebrews 4:9-11 KJV
There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. [10] For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. [11] Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

And to understand the importance of understanding the true Sabbath rest, Paul, in the very next verse points us to the importance of Scripture in understanding.

Hebrews 4:12 KJV
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Isaiah 53:11 KJV ….by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many;

These believers should understand that the judgement is a time when, prior to the final close of probation, all people can be prayed for. How important is this in today’s world? One only has to listen to the news to realize the importance of prayer for those suffering, for loved ones – family members, for world leaders, for those taking the Christian gospel into dark areas….. The list truly goes on. This does not involve beating our chest and seeing how much noise we can make. It is God’s people retiring to their place of quiet and praying. This is what the devil fears.

The following passage makes it clear that God’s Spirit will not always strive with mankind.

Genesis 6:3 KJV – And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man….

There is coming a time when the windows of opportunity will be closed. The parable of the 10 virgins (Matt. 25:1-13)   speaks of this time when salvation’s window of opportunity will be closed forever.

102 I answered and said, “If I have found favor in your sight, show further to me, your servant, whether on the day of judgment the righteous will be able to intercede for the ungodly or to entreat the Most High for them— 103 fathers for sons or sons for parents, brothers for brothers, relatives for their kindred, or friends for those who are most dear.”
 104 He answered me and said, “Since you have found favor in my sight, I will show you this also. The day of judgment is decisive and displays to all the seal of truth. Just as now a father does not send his son, or a son his father, or a master his servant, or a friend his dearest friend, to be ill or sleep or eat or be healed in his place, 105 so no one shall ever pray for another on that day, neither shall anyone lay a burden on another; for then all shall bear their own righteousness and unrighteousness.”
 36 106 I answered and said, “How then do we find that first Abraham prayed for the people of Sodom, and Moses for our ancestors who sinned in the desert, 37 107 and Joshua after him for Israel in the days of Achan, 38 108 and Samuel in the days of Saul, and David for the plague, and Solomon for those at the dedication, 39 109 and Elijah for those who received the rain, and for the one who was dead, that he might live, 40 110 and Hezekiah for the people in the days of Sennacherib, and many others prayed for many? 41 111 So if now, when corruption has increased and unrighteousness has multiplied, the righteous have prayed for the ungodly, why will it not be so then as well?”
42 112 He answered me and said, “This present world is not the end; the full glory does not remain in it; therefore those who were strong prayed for the weak. 43 113 But the day of judgment will be the end of this age and the beginning of the immortal age to come, in which corruption has passed away, 44 114 sinful indulgence has come to an end, unbelief has been cut off, and righteousness has increased and truth has appeared. 45 115 Therefore no one will then be able to have mercy on someone who has been condemned in the judgment, or to harm someone who is victorious.” 2 Esdras 7:102-113

From time immemorial God has been looking for that degree of faith and perception in His people. A faith that will not hesitate to surrender all. Self-surrender, as symbolised by the burnt offering is what God requires. Nothing less, for He is a jealous God. This is what the Old Testament calls the “daily”. Something that Jesus alluded to when He was speaking about the end times.

Matthew 24:15 KJV
When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand):

Daniel 8:11,13-14 KJV
Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down. [13] Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot? [14] And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.

What is the most important thing to God?
It is the communion between God and his people.
“This is life eternal” said Jesus “that they may know thee…” John 17:3

Anything that stands between God and his people is an abomination to him for He is a “jealous” God. Exodus 34:14

So we see that the grand theme of intercession  is to be looked into, researched, and put into practice. To understand something is to give it wings.

Or alternatively we could quote Hosea.
Hosea 4:6 ESV My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge………

Intercession will play a very real part in the comfort of God’s people. I am reminded of the words of a song by Chuck Girard.

It’s the name above all names,
And we will declare it, we will declare it
It’s the name above all names,
And we will shout it to a dying world.

I am Jehovah! I Am that I Am! And My trumpet shall soon call out
I formed the worlds with a whisper
But I’m getting ready, I’m getting ready, I’m getting ready
To shout!

Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the LORD’s hand double for all her sins. A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD;  make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.  Isa. 40:1-5 ESV

      Thank you for your comments. Note I have deleted the website url you’re promoting. I apologise for this. I realise there are many worthwhile websites such as yours that I should share. But herein is my dilemma. Many websites are dangerous and contain questionable material. So how do I determine what is ‘safe’ or ‘unsafe’? So I have just been doing a blanket ban on all websites. This is probably a heavy handed and ‘silly’ approach. But this is the only ‘safe’ way I know. I don’t want this website or my readers devices to be compromised in any way. Any advice from anyone who is more tech savvy than me would be appreciated.

      Interesting point you bring out. Though I would think that the JW’s are not necessary a harmless group. In denying the divinity of Jesus Christ they would fall under the umbrella of what John writes about in 1 John 4:1-3. In that sense I would have to agree with the Orthodox Church that they are a ‘heretical group’. I know you are trying to bring out a principle here – of persecution. In hanging our hopes on an expected outward show of ‘persecution’ we may be unaware of what is happening at a deeper spiritual level. I refer to the article on this website ‘Thoughts on Last Day Events’.

      Thanks for your comments. Many of the subjects written about here would be covered on other sites. Search engines come up with lots of material. But we have to be “wise as serpents and harmless as doves in sifting through it all”. It can be challenging. I have tried to be honest and circumspect in writing these things. I hope the results are changed lives and peaceful hearts.

      I knew little or nothing about the subject before I started with this blog. Find a good provider that has good reviews and you feel you can work with. Then select a platform to publish with. I use Word Press 3.6. It seems to work for me. But it was a steep learning curve for me when I first started. The tutorials on you tube are good. Wish you well on your endeavours. Let me know how you get on.

      Sorry I can’t be of any real help there. I know there is always the potential for this to happen. In my case if any content is used in a positive constructive way, I guess I’m ok with that. If there is any negative, destructive influence that becomes a bit harder. Human nature is what it is….. No, I don’t know of any techniques to prevent it.
