Just as a small rudder can send a sizeable boat easily in any direction, so one verse of Scripture can send a church in a right or a wrong direction depending on its interpretation. “And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws……” Dan.7:25.
This verse has always been used to reinforce the SDA’s stance on the Sabbath day. It describes one of nine signs that point to the identity of the Antichrist power of Daniel 7. Most scholars would be in agreement on these pointers except of course to 7:25 referring to the change of the Sabbath. This would appear to be the prerogative of SDA’s alone.
This Antichrist power would arise among the ten kingdoms that came after the iron monarchy of Rome. The book of Daniel is progressive. Just as chapter 7 is a further unfolding of what is revealed in chapter 2 so the chapters after 7 are a further unfolding of this same line of truth.
The Antichrist power:
-
Would arise after the ten. (vs.24)
-
Would arise among the ten. (vs.8)
-
It would conquer 3 of the 10. (vs.24)
-
It would be different from the 10. (vs.24)
-
It was to be a leading power in Europe. (vs.24,25)
-
It would speak against God. (vs.25)
-
It would persecute the saints. (vs.25)
-
It would change times and laws. (vs.25)
-
It would reign for 1260 years. (vs.25)

I want to comment on a couple of things:
Daniel 8:11 the word sacrifices has been added, this is recognized by the italicized of the word in the KJV & NKJV, the Hebrew word is Tamid, and it means not just the Burnt offering, but the whole sanctuary system, otherwise meaning the complete salvation work of Jesus Christ.
Secondly the idea that changing of times in Daniel 7:25 only relates to the Sabbath is incorrect, at the Council of Nicea 325 the church under the authority of Rome was to cease all things “Jewish” which included circumcision, Jewish religious training, all celebration of the feasts and festivals, the Hebrew calendar, was replaced by the Julian calendar. The day now was from midnight to midnight, as opposed from sunset to sunset, as prophesied in Daniel 7:25, speaking of a king that comes out of the fourth kingdom, Rome he will…. oppress Gods holy people and try to change the set times and the laws.

Let us look briefly through the New Testament to find which day Paul kept and taught Gentile converts to keep. 1. Acts 13:14-15, 42-44:
Yes it would have been expected that Paul met on the Sabbath. He wanted to reach as many people as possible. And that is the day when the Jews met. In vs.16,17 we are told, “So Paul stood up and with a gesture began to speak:”You Israelites, and others who fear God, listen….. And again in vs.45 “But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy….. NRSV
To say that Paul was teaching the gentiles to keep the Sabbath might be considered a bit of a stretch.
